Mayor Linda Williams-Short
Since being elected Mayor of Mayersville in 2001, I’ve worked diligently—following in the footsteps of civil rights icon and former mayor Unita Blackwell—to improve the quality of life for our residents. One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is the construction of seven new homes right here in town. While that number may seem small to some, in a rural community like ours, it's a meaningful step forward in addressing long-standing housing challenges.
My administration has also focused on repairing critical infrastructure and expanding access to basic needs. Through a partnership with the Mississippi Food Network, we've brought healthier food options to our residents. We're also working alongside the Delta Health Center to establish a local clinic—an essential resource for those in our community who face transportation barriers when seeking care.
Understanding the importance of connection and culture, I helped found the Mayersville Annual Homecoming Festival. This event reunites current and former residents from across the country each year and reminds us all of the deep roots and shared pride we have in our hometown.
Mayersville, the county seat of Issaquena County, is more than just the place I live—it’s the place I’ve always called home. I’m a lifelong resident, the youngest daughter of the late Saul and Edie B. Williams. I’ve been married to my husband, Larry D. Short, for 29 years—my partner in life and love. Together, we’ve raised a beautiful family: James Jr., Jermey, JaSona, Kiara, Katerri, and the late Jercelle. I’m also the proud grandmother of 13 amazing grandchildren.
For 49 years, I’ve been a member of Rose Hill M.B. Church, where I currently serve as senior choir director. Outside of my mayoral duties, I’m also a small business owner, operating Tony’s Grocery and Celle’s Estate Housing Complex.
I am passionate, dedicated, and driven in my service to the people of Mayersville. But my story isn’t unique—this is a town where everyone pitches in, where neighbors help neighbors, and where progress is a shared goal.
Here in Mayersville, we live by the motto: "Always service over self." And I’m proud to carry that commitment with me every single day.
